Carpenter Raakel Oksa has recently gotten to know her half-brother and his mother Ellen Lähde, who in spite of a lack of blood ties appears to share some tendencies with Raakel: an inquisitive people person, Ellen occasionally comes across little mysteries, the solving of which brings a pleasant frisson to her life.
When Ellen begins to investigate the estate of Kaarina, a woman who lived and died alone, and poke about Kaarina’s hoarder’s paradise of an apartment, she requires Raakel’s help. Raakel soon learns that Kaarina, her beau Mauno, and her friend Sinikka were an inseparable trio back in the 1970s. But all three lives changed permanently in 1975, when Sinikka took on the position of hostess at Finlandia Hall for the conference of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, preventing her from spending the summer with her friends.
The Silver Locket is the second installment of the Raakel Oksa Sets It Right series of detective novels. The first book, The Buttercup Dress (2022), rose to the top of bestseller lists in Finland. In the series, self-employed carpenter Raakel renovates homes around Helsinki. Layering mysteries, all-too-human relationship muddles, and clever plot twists, the books dovetail neatly with Nuotio’s previous bestselling series, Ellen Lähde Investigates.
